Job Description

The Role

Peninsula Grammar School is seeking a dedicated Grounds Supervisor to join our property department. This is a full-time, permanent role and is key to maintaining the school’s high-quality sporting fields and landscaped grounds, ensuring a safe and visually appealing environment for students, staff, and visitors. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, you will oversee the maintenance and presentation of sports fields, gardens, outdoor spaces, and irrigation systems. This hands-on leadership role involves coordinating daily tasks, supporting staff and contractors, and ensuring all grounds meet high standards of safety and quality.

Your daily tasks will include but are not limited to:

Grounds & Turf Management

  • Develop and implement comprehensive maintenance programs for sports turf, gardens, and school grounds.
  • Oversee mowing, edging, weeding, pruning, aeration, top dressing, fertilising, and seasonal renovations.
  • Prepare and maintain sports fields for school fixtures, training sessions, inter school competitions, and major events.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all outdoor facilities to identify hazards, maintenance needs, and opportunities for improvement.

Irrigation & Water Management

  •  Manage the school’s irrigation systems, including programming, monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairs.
  • Optimise water efficiency and ensure reliable performance across all turf and garden areas.

Team & Operations Support

  • Coordinate and support daily operations of the grounds team, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
  •  Assist with set ups for outdoor school events, functions, and activities.
  •  Collaborate closely with the Facilities team, Director of Sport, and coaching staff to meet the campus and sports program needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of grounds activities, maintenance schedules, chemical applications, and irrigation works.
  • Ensure full compliance with WHS, chemical handling standards, and school policies.

General Grounds Maintenance

  • Operate and maintain grounds equipment including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and turf machinery.
  • Support general maintenance tasks as required across the school’s outdoor facilities.
  • Provide input into grounds improvements, redevelopment projects, and seasonal planning.

Desired Skills and Experience

About You
You will be a proactive and skilled grounds professional who takes pride in delivering exceptional outdoor environments.

The ideal candidate will have:
•    Training or qualifications in Sports Turf Management, Horticulture, or equivalent experience.
•    Demonstrated experience in grounds or turf maintenance within a school, sporting facility, council, golf course, or similar environment.
•    Strong knowledge of turf species suitable for Victorian conditions and modern maintenance practices.
•    Experience with irrigation systems, turf machinery, and general grounds equipment.
•    Good understanding of WHS requirements and safe chemical handling (AQF Level 3 preferred).
•    Excellent communication skills, the ability to follow instructions and lead by example.
•    Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
•    Physical capability to perform outdoor manual work in varying conditions.
•    A current Victorian driver’s licence and relevant accreditations.
